The stovetop isn t generally in use at the same time as the slow cooker and is designed to take the heat moisture splatters or drips that might come from the cooker. That said if you have a large baking dish the ones usually used to roast a huge whole turkey what i do is place that dish mine is just a thin aluminum one like 5 from the grocery store on the counter line it with a few paper towels then put the crock pot on top of that. We put a stack of books on top of it to hold in down. This type of slow cooker can be set to cook on either low or high for a predetermined length of time often in 30 minute increments.
