Make a slit underneath the carpet with your utility knife where you need to trim off excess carpeting.
Can you over stretch carpet.
Place the carpet cutter in the slit.
Loose carpeting most commonly occurs in older carpeting.
The longer you wait to correct it the worse it will get.
As you apply more pressure on the lever you ll feel the carpet stretch.
Press down the cutter to trim off the excess carpet.
This will help hold the carpet in the high traction area.
Adjust the teeth to let go of the carpeting then lift the head and handle and start over using the appropriate.
If it s too easy you re not stretching the carpet enough to remove the ridges.
Smaller spans require less pressure.
Carpet stretching can be more of a challenge in times like this but we re up for it.

Between heavy furniture and high foot traffic your carpet will begin to loosen over time leaving you with a frustrating bump in the middle of your living room.

On the face of it installing new carpet over the old carpet does have some advantages.
Look for transition molding that can be nailed in place over the carpet in the doorway.
We can stretch the carpet by just moving the furniture a little bit out of the way but it is more time consuming and therefore can be more expensive.
If you are stretching carpet over or through doorways you ll need to pick up some additional materials at the hardware or flooring supply store.
And if the existing carpet was glued down not tacked it can be a huge time saver to lay the new carpet over the old.
